URBAN ARTS ENSEMBLE RUHR

CRACKS

Choreography Rauf Yasit

Hip hop deals with social grievances and is a way of testing oneself and rising above everyday life and exclusion. These peaceful and self-productive cultural techniques are often based on painful experiences - precisely those that CRACKS choreographer Rauf Yasit shares with the dancers: the experience of flight, waiting in offices that decide over entire lives, or the general search for support and cohesion in an increasingly drifting society. In this context, graffiti on the walls of buildings seemed like cracks to Rauf Yasit, behind which other, better worlds opened up.

Following on from the artists' perspectives, “CRACKS” brings together the styles of breaking, hip-hop and krump with elements of contemporary dance and thematizes the search for traces along cracks that run through society in terms of participation, acceptance and accessibility. It is not about a pure self-examination of the present and past of urban dance and the actors on stage, but about universal questions and experiences. The production follows individual and collective stories. Injuries and insecurities form landscapes of the soul and characterize dialogues and movements.

Exciting, touching, relevant questions run through “CRACKS”. Questions about one's own opinion and position: Are cracks a constitutive and acceptable element of a society or do they need to be mended? How do individuals deal with the cracks in their lives? Can they heal them or do they remain open wounds for the rest of their lives?
